Major Android 17 Changes Coming to Motorola Smartphones
Since Motorola’s UI is largely based on stock Android, most of Android 13’s underlying changes will make their way to the company’s flagship smartphones.
Cover Screen Optimization: Additional widgets can now be placed directly onto the cover screen on Motorola Razr foldables, with multitasking features being expanded upon.
Granular Permission Management: Users will be able to restrict background accesses to clipboard content, sensors, and media files on a per-application basis.
Performance and Battery Management: Background processes will be better prioritized to maximize performance on entry-level Dimensity 6xxx and Snapdragon 6xxx SoCs under heavy usage.
Smart Display and File Streaming: There are reports of enhanced display streaming capabilities for Motorola’s smart display and PC-connectivity feature Smart Connect.
Motorola’s Android 17 Eligibility Policy: Which Devices Are Getting the Update?
Motorola usually provides different levels of OS support for its various product lines.
Flagship Razr and Edge smartphones will typically receive 3 to 4 major OS updates and 4 to 5 years of monthly security patches.
Entry-level Moto G series smartphones, on the other hand, only receive 1 to 2 major OS updates.

How to Check and Install Android 17 on Eligible Motorola Smartphones
Once Motorola starts pushing out the Over-The-Air (OTA) update to your region, you can check for the update in the following way:
1. Open the Settings menu on your Motorola smartphone
2. Look for the System option and then select “System Updates”
3. From here, you will be able to see if an update is available for your device
4. If it is, back up your data and make sure your battery level is at least at 50%
5. Download the Over-The-Air (OTA) update via WiFi
FAQ
- Are unlocked Motorola smartphones getting Android 17 updates faster than carrier models?
Yes, that is generally the case. Unlocked retail smartphones typically receive updates directly from Motorola, while carrier-locked devices (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.) have to go through an additional certification process before receiving the update.
2. Will I lose my data when I update my Motorola smartphone to Android 17?
No, a standard OTA update should not wipe your data. However, it is always a good idea to take a local backup of your data before installing major OS updates to prevent data loss in case of an unexpected error during the update.
3. Will budget Moto G smartphones be able to run all of the new Android 17 features?
The majority of Android 17 changes will be available on all Motorola smartphones as they are mostly centered around improving security and privacy. However, certain features like desktop-mode Smart Connect or camera enhancements may not be available on lower-end budget Moto G smartphones.
