GST 2.0 Explained: What Gets Cheaper, What Gets Costlier From Sept 22

India’s indirect tax system is about to get a major shake-up. At its latest meeting, the GST Council rolled out GST 2.0, simplifying the old system of four slabs into just three.

From September 22, 2025, GST will work on 5%, 18%, and 40% slabs, instead of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. The idea is simple — make the tax easier to follow, cut rates on essentials, and push luxury and “sin” goods into a higher bracket.

    What Changes Under GST 2.0

Here’s the big picture in plain English:

Everyday essentials (like soaps, shampoos, and dairy) are now much cheaper.

Most goods and services (from household appliances to small cars) will fall under the 18% slab.

Luxury and sin items (think tobacco, pan masala, casinos, and high-end vehicles) are pushed into a steep 40% category.

Some things — like health insurance, life insurance, lifesaving drugs, and school supplies — are fully GST-free.

    ✅ Cheaper After September 22

Daily-use products like hair oil, toothpaste, and shaving cream drop from 18% → 5%.

Dairy products such as ghee, butter, and cheese slide from 12% → 5%.

Health gear like thermometers, oxygen machines, and test kits also go to 5%.

Education basics — notebooks, maps, pencils, erasers — are at zero GST.

Appliances & vehicles — ACs, TVs above 32 inches, computer monitors, two-wheelers up to 350cc, and small cars move from 28% → 18%.

    ❌ Costlier Under GST 2.0

Coal and mining products climb from 5% → 18%.

Luxury vehicles — bikes over 350cc, big cars, yachts, and private jets — jump from 28% → 40%.

Sin goods — pan masala, tobacco, fizzy energy drinks — now fall under 40% GST.

Casinos, betting, and online money gaming also rise sharply to 40%.

🆕 The New GST Slabs At A Glance

0% GST → Dairy, lifesaving medicines, education items. (

    (AI Overview

Under new GST rules effective September 22, 2025, 33 life-saving drugs are now exempt from GST (Nil rate), and three critical medicines for cancer and rare diseases have also been moved to Nil GST from a previous 5% rate. Additionally, the GST rate for all other drugs and medicines has been reduced from 12% to 5%, making essential therapies more affordable for patients and families across India.)

5% GST → Essentials and basic healthcare.

18% GST → Most goods and services, including electronics and small cars.

40% GST → Luxury and sin goods (tobacco, gaming, luxury rides).

    Why This Matters

For the average consumer, GST 2.0 is good news — soaps, shampoos, dairy, school items, and even some appliances are now cheaper. On the flip side, the government is taxing luxury and lifestyle choices more heavily.

For businesses, fewer slabs mean simpler compliance, but billing systems and pricing will need a quick reset before the September rollout.

In short: basics are lighter on your wallet, luxuries just got pricier.
