WhatsApp Rolls Out New Per-Chat Storage Management Feature for Easier File Control

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, is rolling out a new storage management feature designed to make it easier for users to monitor and clean up large files from individual chats. The feature, currently in beta testing for both iOS and Android, offers a more convenient and intuitive way to control how much space each conversation occupies.

A Smarter Way to Manage Chat Storage

According to WABetaInfo, a website known for tracking WhatsApp updates, the latest beta versions include a “Manage Storage†option directly within each chat’s info screen. This eliminates the need to dig through the app’s general settings — a common hassle for users who want to clear space quickly.

With this feature, users can now view all media shared in a conversation — including photos, videos, documents, and other files — displayed in a clean, organized grid. Items are sorted by file size, and users can filter them by “Newest,†“Oldest,†or “Largest,†making it simple to spot storage-heavy content at a glance.

    Bulk Deletion and Easy Favorites

The updated interface also introduces tools for bulk deleting multiple files at once, significantly reducing the time it takes to clear unwanted data. For media users who wish to keep, WhatsApp has added the option to star or favorite selected photos and videos, ensuring they remain easily accessible later.

Previously, users had to navigate through Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage to perform similar cleanups. This new in-chat method makes the process far more seamless, allowing users to manage files right where they spend most of their time — inside the conversation itself.

    Better Control and Cleaner Phones

Until now, WhatsApp only showed shared files in the “Media, Links, and Docs†section, which didn’t provide file size details or total storage usage per chat. The new feature changes that completely by offering a detailed per-chat storage breakdown, helping users identify which conversations take up the most space.

This is especially useful for people who frequently exchange large videos, high-resolution images, or documents in personal or group chats. With this granular control, users can declutter chats more efficiently and keep their devices running smoothly without deleting important conversations.

    Beta Testing and Rollout Plans

The per-chat storage management feature is currently being tested among a limited number of beta users through the TestFlight program for iOS and the WhatsApp Beta app for Android. The iOS beta version 25.31.10.70 reportedly includes this feature, while a similar rollout is underway for Android users as well.

WhatsApp is expected to expand the feature gradually after testing its performance, stability, and user feedback. Once stable, it will likely roll out to all users in the coming months.

A Step Toward Better User Experience

With this update, WhatsApp continues its mission to make digital communication simpler and smarter. By integrating storage management directly into each chat, the platform not only saves users time but also helps prevent storage overload — one of the most common frustrations for smartphone users today.

This small but impactful change ensures that users stay in control of their device storage, one chat at a time.
