Apple Cracks Down on Viral “Tea” Apps Over Privacy and Moderation Concerns

Apple has officially removed the controversial Tea and TeaOnHer apps from the App Store, citing repeated violations of content moderation and user privacy rules. The move comes after months of controversy surrounding these viral dating-review platforms, which allowed users to anonymously post about their dating experiences, often sparking debates about privacy, consent, and defamation.

🚫 Why Apple Removed the Apps

According to Apple, both apps failed to meet key App Store requirements around content moderation, data protection, and the handling of minors’ personal information. The company also received thousands of user complaints and negative reviews, prompting an investigation.

Apple confirmed that it communicated with the developers multiple times to resolve these issues, but the problems “persisted despite repeated warnings.”
The apps were officially removed on October 21, 2025, from the iOS App Store in all regions, as confirmed by Appfigures, an app analytics platform.

💥 What the “Tea” Apps Were About

The original Tea Dating Advice app launched quietly in 2023 but exploded in popularity during mid-2025. The concept was simple but controversial:
Users — mainly women — could post anonymous reviews of men they had dated, often including details like red flags, green flags, and personal anecdotes.

While marketed as a “dating safety app”, critics argued that it invaded privacy and risked spreading false or defamatory claims.

Following its viral success, several copycats emerged — most notably TeaOnHer, which flipped the idea and allowed men to post reviews about women.

    🔓 Security Breaches and Lawsuits

Privacy concerns around these apps escalated quickly.
In July 2025, Tea suffered a major data breach, exposing over 72,000 images, including driver’s licenses, selfies, and even private messages.
Several lawsuits followed, with plaintiffs accusing the company of mishandling sensitive user data.

In August, TeaOnHer also suffered a security lapse, exposing its API documentation and leaving user data temporarily accessible online. Although the developers claimed to fix it within an hour, the damage to user trust was already done.

Apple cited these breaches as major reasons behind its decision, referencing violations of its App Review Guidelines 1.2, 5.1.2, and 5.6, which deal with user-generated content, personal data handling, and developer conduct.

    🧠 Developer Response

TeaOnHer founder Xavier Lampkin expressed disappointment at Apple’s decision, claiming that his team implemented “advanced AI content filtering, manual moderation, and enhanced minor protection systems” after multiple rounds of feedback.

He added that the app underwent 20+ review cycles with Apple and removed thousands of inappropriate posts daily, but the ban still went through.

Meanwhile, Tea Dating Advice did not respond to requests for comment.

    📈 What Happens Next

Despite being banned from the App Store, the Tea and TeaOnHer apps remain available on Google Play — though it’s unclear how long that will last, as Google has yet to comment.

Meanwhile, a new clone called “Tea On Her & Him – Overheard” has quickly risen in popularity, now ranking #1 in the Lifestyle category on Apple’s App Store.

Appfigures reports that before their removal:

    • Tea had over 6.1 million lifetime downloads and earned $5 million in revenue.

    • TeaOnHer reached 2.2 million downloads, though it did not offer in-app purchases.

    ⚠️ The Bigger Picture

Apple’s crackdown is part of a broader push to tighten app moderation and enforce stricter privacy standards. In recent months, the company has removed several apps that violated user safety or transparency policies — a move many experts see as part of Apple’s ongoing effort to maintain trust in its ecosystem amid global data privacy debates.
