Microsoft Brings Back Voice Commands with “Hey Copilot” in Windows 11

Nearly a decade after Cortana faded away, Microsoft is giving voice control another shot — this time powered by its advanced Copilot AI. The company is rolling out new upgrades for Windows 11, introducing the ability to simply say “Hey Copilot” to interact with your PC through voice and vision.

With this update, users can now ask Copilot questions based on what’s currently on their screen. For example, if you’re viewing vacation photos from Hawaii, you could ask where they were taken, plan a flight, or even request a budgeting estimate for a similar trip — all without touching your keyboard.

    Smarter AI with Context Awareness

Unlike Cortana’s limited voice responses, Copilot Vision actually “sees” what’s on your screen. Microsoft’s demos show users asking Copilot to adjust Spotify settings for high-quality streaming or generate a short bio from a set of photos. The AI highlights options on-screen, guiding users step-by-step.

However, because Copilot Vision relies on cloud processing, screenshots of your desktop are sent to Microsoft’s servers. This may raise privacy concerns — especially after the backlash over the Recall feature earlier this year. Microsoft emphasizes that “Hey Copilot” is completely opt-in, and users can enable or disable it anytime in the Copilot app settings.

    Introducing Copilot Actions

The next big step is Copilot Actions, a feature that allows the AI to perform Windows tasks automatically. Initially tested for web automation, it can now handle local tasks like renaming, resizing, or organizing photos. You can monitor and control each action directly from the Copilot interface, and Microsoft says all operations happen in a sandboxed environment for added security.

While this feature sounds futuristic, some users are cautious — it could be powerful but potentially risky if exploited by malware. Microsoft claims Copilot Actions has undergone extensive internal testing and will roll out gradually for Windows 11 Insiders.

    Expanding the Copilot Ecosystem

Alongside “Hey Copilot,” Microsoft is also launching an Ask Copilot search bar on the Windows 11 taskbar — turning it into what the company calls a “dynamic productivity hub.” Additional integrations with Manus and Filmora will let users convert documents into websites or create videos directly from File Explorer.

For now, “Hey Copilot” and Copilot Vision are available globally on Windows 11 PCs that already have Copilot access. As Microsoft continues to blur the lines between AI and operating systems, “Hey Copilot” might just become the company’s most practical voice assistant yet — one that learns from Cortana’s mistakes.
