Samsung Debuts Its First Trifold Phone Ahead of Apple’s Folding iPhone — Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold Launches
Samsung has finally taken the next big leap in foldable technology. The company has officially unveiled the Galaxy Z TriFold, its first-ever trifold smartphone — a device designed to show the world that Samsung still leads the foldable segment, especially with Apple preparing to enter the category next year.
Set to launch first in South Korea on December 12, the Galaxy Z TriFold is priced at 3.59 million won (approx. $2,450). Samsung has confirmed availability in major global markets, including the US, China, UAE, Taiwan, and Singapore, although US pricing has not been shared yet.
🚀 A Massive Leap: Two Hinges, Three Screens, One Giant Display
The Galaxy Z TriFold stands out because of its dual-hinge system, allowing it to fold inward from both sides. When closed, it feels like a regular smartphone, but when fully unfolded, it transforms into a 10-inch tablet-like display — even larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Samsung’s design differs from Huawei’s Mate XT lineup, which folds in a Z-shape. With Samsung’s approach, each unfolded section can run an app independently. That means:
-
Up to three apps side-by-side
-
Each section is reportedly equivalent to around 6.5-inch smartphone screens
For productivity lovers, Samsung has also integrated a special version of DeX, allowing the TriFold to act like a full desktop — without requiring an external monitor for the first time.
🔋 Biggest Battery Ever in a Samsung Foldable Phone
Samsung has included a 5,600mAh battery, the largest ever in any Galaxy foldable.
The company claims:
-
Up to 17 hours of continuous video playback when fully unfolded
-
Aluminum frame + improved hinge durability
-
One-time 50% discount on display repair to ease long-term concerns
At its thinnest edge, the TriFold measures just 3.9mm — incredibly slim considering the engineering complexity.
🧠 Galaxy AI on a Trifold
The Galaxy Z TriFold comes loaded with Samsung’s full suite of Galaxy AI tools:
-
Generative Edit
-
Photo Assist
-
Writing Assist
-
Call Assist
-
And more
Buyers also get a 6-month Google AI Pro subscription included.
📉 Limited Shipments — But Strategic Timing
Analysts say the TriFold won’t be produced in large quantities — and that’s intentional. Samsung wants to show technological leadership as Apple prepares to launch its first folding iPhone in late 2026.
Apple’s foldable is expected to follow a book-style fold, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold series — not a trifold.
This early move gives Samsung a strong head start as competition heats up.
📈 Foldable Market Still Small, Samsung Still Dominant
Despite all the innovation, foldables account for only 2.5% of the smartphone market.
Still, Samsung remains dominant with:
-
64% market share in foldables
-
Highest quarterly foldable shipments in Q3
Huawei’s Mate XT and Mate XTs are Samsung’s biggest competition in China, but lack global Android ecosystem support.
🖐️ Hands-On Impression
Early demos show:
-
Smooth folding
-
Triple-app multitasking feels natural
-
The device warns users if they fold it the wrong way
-
Tablet experience is noticeably more immersive than any current foldable
The Samsung TriFold is not meant for the masses, but it proves what Samsung can do before Apple arrives in the foldable race.
