NVIDIA Unveils Its First US-Made Blackwell Wafer — A Milestone for American Chip Manufacturing
NVIDIA has reached a major milestone in its chip journey by showcasing the first-ever Blackwell wafer manufactured in the United States. The wafer — the foundation of NVIDIA’s next-generation AI chips — was produced at TSMC’s state-of-the-art semiconductor facility in Phoenix, Arizona.
Originally introduced last year, NVIDIA’s Blackwell platform aims to redefine AI computing. Major tech leaders like Amazon, Google, and OpenAI have already committed to using the new architecture, which promises up to 25 times greater efficiency in cost and energy compared to previous generations.
By producing wafers locally at TSMC’s Arizona plant, NVIDIA strengthens its supply chain while reducing exposure to global trade tensions and tariffs. “This marks the first time in modern American history that one of the most critical chips is being built right here in the United States by TSMC,” said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s founder and CEO, during the event.
As Blackwell enters large-scale production, NVIDIA continues to expand its presence across the US. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to invest around half a trillion dollars into building AI infrastructure nationwide through partnerships with TSMC, Foxconn, and other major players.
