Japan estimates damage caused by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which injured 33 people.
A powerful earthquake struck northern Japan late Monday, sending waves through coastal cities along the Pacific Ocean and causing extensive damage to buildings. As the country woke up Tuesday morning, officials predicted significant damage, and indeed, they urged the public to remain alert for aftershocks.
A photo from Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, captured the moment—a man removes debris from a damaged commercial facility. The 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused widespread concern, but key infrastructure remained largely unscathed. This was made possible by Japan’s improved technology, which spared buildings from extensive damage.
33 injured, one critically
According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, 33 people were injured, and more are feared. There have been no reports of casualties yet. Most of the victims were injured by falling objects. NHK reports that one person is in critical condition. Local hospitals continued to treat the injured overnight.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed concern about the situation and confirmed that an emergency response task force has been activated. He said, “People’s lives come first, and every effort is being made to help the most affected areas. Those who may be trapped will be rescued as quickly as possible.”
Earthquake Location and Tsunami Activity
The earthquake struck at around 11:15 p.m., about 80 kilometers from Aomori in northern Honshu. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake at a magnitude of 7.6, and struck about 44 km below the surface.
The tremor produced waves up to 70 cm high at Kuji Port in Iwate, and smaller waves in nearby coastal areas. Some oyster farming equipment was reportedly damaged. Fortunately, all tsunami advisories were lifted by 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, suggesting the threat has now been resolved.
Power, Transport, and Infrastructure
About 800-900 homes experienced temporary power outages, and Shinkansen bullet trains were halted overnight, but services have now been restored.
About 480 people took shelter at Hachinohe Air Base, while 18 defense helicopters were deployed to inspect damage in the area. At Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport, about 200 passengers spent the night as one terminal was rendered unusable due to roof damage.
Nuclear safety officials reported that 450 liters of water was continuously leaking from the cooling area of the Rokkasho reprocessing plant, but they confirmed that there was no cause for concern, as everything was normal and all readings were normal.
Japan estimated the damage caused by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that injured 33 people—and warned of further dangers.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned people that aftershocks could continue for several days. The agency has announced a slight increase in the risk of a magnitude 8 earthquake and another tsunami along Japan’s northeastern coast from Chiba to Hokkaido.
In this case, the JMA has asked 182 municipalities to be prepared. Experts said this was not a sign of a major event, but a reminder that even small earthquakes can be unpredictable.
Echoes of 2011
Monday’s earthquake struck north of the area that was hit by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011, killing nearly 20,000 people and bringing Fukushima Daiichi to a standstill.
JMA official Satoshi Harada warned, “You should be prepared to assume that such a disaster could happen again.”
Aftershocks Continue
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded more aftershocks a few hours after the initial quake—a 6.6 magnitude quake followed by a 5.1 magnitude quake.
An India Today report stated that nearly 90,000 people were evacuated, although infrastructure withstood most of the shaking. The incident reminded the country once again of its location in the dangerous Ring of Fire.
