Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max: 8,000 Nits Brightness Claim Comes With a Catch
Huawei has officially unveiled its new Mate 80 lineup — the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro Max, and the premium Mate 80 RS. The biggest headline feature is the Mate 80 Pro Max’s display, which Huawei claims can hit a record-breaking 8000 nits peak brightness. But there’s an important detail hidden behind that number.
⚡ The 8000 Nits Brightness Claim Isn’t What It Seems
Huawei says the Mate 80 Pro Max’s dual-layer OLED panel can reach 8,000 nits, but this measurement was taken at 1% APL (Average Picture Level) — meaning only a tiny portion of the display was lit during the test.
In real-world usage, this number is much lower and won’t match what you get on full-screen HDR content.
Still, the panel is expected to be extremely bright and competitive with devices like the Oppo Find X9 Pro and OnePlus 15, which currently lead brightness tests at realistic APL conditions.

However, in China, the Mate 80 lineup is expected to perform exceptionally well.
