AWS and OpenAI Announce $38 Billion Multi-Year Strategic Partnership
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI have officially announced a multi-year strategic partnership worth $38 billion, marking one of the largest AI infrastructure deals in history. The agreement will allow OpenAI to run its advanced generative AI workloads—like ChatGPT and future large-scale models—on AWS’s world-class infrastructure powered by NVIDIA GPUs.
A Deal to Power the Next Era of AI
Under the deal, OpenAI gains immediate access to AWS’s Amazon EC2 UltraServers, equipped with hundreds of thousands of cutting-edge NVIDIA chips, and can scale up to tens of millions of CPUs. This move ensures that OpenAI’s AI training and inference workloads can run faster, more efficiently, and securely.
AWS’s proven experience in running massive-scale AI infrastructure will help OpenAI accelerate research and deployment of new AI models. These systems are optimized for high-performance computing, connecting thousands of NVIDIA GB200 and GB300 GPUs to deliver low-latency and reliable AI operations.
“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,†said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the compute ecosystem that powers this next era and brings advanced AI to everyone.â€
“AWS’s infrastructure is built to handle AI at global scale,†added Matt Garman, CEO of AWS. “This partnership proves why AWS remains the trusted backbone for world-leading AI workloads.â€

Expanding Global AI Capacity
OpenAI will begin using AWS compute immediately, with all planned capacity expected to be operational by the end of 2026, and the potential to expand into 2027 and beyond. The infrastructure includes advanced clustering designs that connect GPUs across networks to handle everything from ChatGPT inference to next-generation model training.
AWS will provide top-tier security, scale, and performance, ensuring OpenAI’s workloads run efficiently while managing the rising global demand for AI compute.
Impact on AI and the Cloud Market
The announcement sent Amazon’s stock soaring nearly 5%, as investors viewed the deal as a major win in the competitive cloud AI market. It places AWS ahead of rivals like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in hosting frontier model workloads.
OpenAI, meanwhile, continues expanding its cloud partnerships—already working with Oracle in a $300 billion compute deal and CoreWeave for over $22 billion in GPU infrastructure. With AWS now in the mix, OpenAI gains access to the largest and most reliable AI compute ecosystem available.
