iPhone 18 Pro camera upgrade
Leaked reports suggest that Apple is working on two major upgrades to its rear camera, aiming to make the next-generation iPhone even better.
This testing is currently underway, focusing on a telephoto lens with a wider aperture and a variable aperture for the main camera. The goal of both is to improve image quality and deliver better images in a variety of different lighting conditions.
Variable aperture may debut on Pro models
According to MacRumors, Apple is developing a variable aperture for its iPhone camera. While previous iPhones had a fixed aperture, this new design will allow the aperture to be adjusted. It will automatically adjust the aperture, expanding or contracting depending on the amount of light entering the lens.
In low light, the aperture will be wide open to capture more detail, and in brighter scenes, it will be narrower to prevent overexposure. This will result in clearer images.
Several reports last year suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would be the likely candidates for this feature. Apple is reportedly in talks with suppliers to implement this technology.
From the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple has stuck with an f/1.78 aperture. If this is introduced, it would be Apple’s first variable aperture technology.

Learning from earlier attempts
Variable aperture isn’t new; Samsung introduced it in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 models, allowing users to switch between two apertures. However, it was later removed due to the added cost and the fact that it made the phone thicker.
Apple aims to provide users with the benefits without any compromises. How this system will work is not yet clear.
Brighter telephoto lens under development?
Along with the camera changes, Apple is also testing a larger aperture for the telephoto lens.
The current iPhone 17 Pro has an f/2.8 aperture. This represents an improved resolution compared to the previous generation, and a wider aperture allows for gathering more light, which has improved night photography, reducing noise and enabling faster shutter speeds.
More camera upgrades expected
Further rumors suggest additional improvements, including a teleconverter to extend the optical zoom range and a higher-resolution 24-megapixel front camera.
