Apple Scales Back iPhone Air Production as Other Models Surge Ahead – News
Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air — once expected to be the breakout star of 2025 — is reportedly facing weak demand, prompting the company to reduce its production.
According to a report from The Elec and analysis by Mizuho Securities, Apple plans to cut iPhone Air output by about one million units. While the Air’s sleek, 5.6 mm frame and minimalist design impressed tech fans, consumers appear to be gravitating toward more traditional iPhone models instead.
A design marvel with modest sales
The iPhone Air is Apple’s slimmest device ever — 19% thinner than the iPhone 6 — and features a 48MP Fusion rear camera, a 3149 mAh (eSIM-only) or 3036 mAh battery, and a starting price of $999. Despite its engineering brilliance, the lack of ultra-wide or telephoto lenses and mono speakers may have held it back from wider appeal.
Meanwhile, Apple is increasing production of the iPhone 17 lineup by two million units for the base model, one million for the 17 Pro, and four million for the 17 Pro Max. Analysts say buyers seem more comfortable sticking with the familiar “Pro” experience than experimenting with the ultra-thin Air.

Why the iPhone Air struggled
Ironically, the Air’s biggest competition may have come from within. The standard iPhone 17 gained major upgrades this year, including a ProMotion 120Hz display and significantly improved battery life — now up to 30 hours of video playback. That leap has made the base model a much more tempting option for most buyers.
What’s next for Apple
Despite the disappointing sales, the iPhone Air might serve a larger purpose. Reports suggest Apple’s long-awaited foldable — possibly called the iPhone Fold — could use a dual-Air design concept. However, Bloomberg indicates the foldable iPhone might not arrive until 2027 as Apple continues to refine the hinge and durability.
In the meantime, iPhone 17 orders remain strong, with delivery delays of two to three weeks across major markets including the U.S., U.K., France, China, Japan, and Switzerland.
The iPhone Air remains available in Space Black, Cloud White, Light Gold, and Sky Blue, earning praise for its stunningly thin form and bright display — but criticism for its average audio, camera, and heat management.
