Anbernic’s Affordable Take on the Nintendo DS Costs Less Than $100
After successfully reviving almost every version of the classic Game Boy, handheld maker Anbernic is now setting its sights on the iconic Nintendo DS. The company has officially teased its new dual-screen device, the Anbernic RG DS, through a short reveal video — and the headline news is its price: under $100.
That’s quite a deal considering the original Nintendo DS launched at $149.99. Staying true to its tradition, Anbernic continues to blend nostalgia with affordability, making classic-style handhelds that don’t break the bank. While detailed specs remain under wraps, the teaser hints at a new processor and shows the RG DS in four color options — black/red, teal, white, and transparent.
A release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but based on Anbernic’s usual rollout strategy, sales are likely to begin soon after the teaser. Once it launches, the RG DS will compete with pricier alternatives like the Ayn Thor, which starts at $250.
However, there’s a catch for U.S. buyers — earlier this year, Anbernic temporarily paused shipments from China due to tariff issues, although that restriction appears to have been lifted. Still, with the U.S. government announcing new tariffs on Chinese goods, American retro gaming fans might face limited availability once again.
