Amazon Employees Warn Against ‘Warp-Speed’ AI Rollout in Open Letter
Over a thousand Amazon employees have signed a powerful open letter urging the tech giant to slow down its aggressive push toward artificial intelligence. The letter, published on November 26, raises concerns about job loss, climate impact, and growing surveillance as Amazon accelerates AI development during a period of global layoffs and rising automation anxiety.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced plans to cut around 14,000 corporate roles. Now, employees across departments — from engineers to warehouse staff — say leadership is moving “at all costs” toward AI without considering the risks to workers, democracy, or the environment.
According to the letter, Amazon’s strategy prioritizes AI expansion over its long-standing climate commitments. Despite earlier pledges to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, Amazon’s carbon footprint has increased by 35% since 2019. Employees point out that the company plans to spend over $150 billion on new AI data centers, many of which will operate in drought-affected regions and rely on energy sources that could keep coal and gas plants running longer.
The signatories also express concerns about Amazon forcing more AI integration internally while investing in systems that could reduce the need for human employees. They claim workloads have increased, deadlines have shortened, and workers are being pushed to build AI tools with minimal career progression support.
Warehouse employees, the letter notes, are already struggling with increased surveillance, tighter productivity tracking, and higher injury rates — issues amplified by AI monitoring systems.
Another major accusation is Amazon’s involvement in expanding AI-powered surveillance and collaborating with companies developing autonomous weapon software. The letter also criticizes Amazon, alongside other tech giants, for lobbying against AI regulation at the state level.
The employees are now asking Amazon leadership to commit to three principles:
-
No AI powered by dirty or non-renewable energy
-
No AI expansion without worker representation
-
No AI for policing, violence, surveillance, or deportations
The open letter continues to gather signatures from Amazon and other major tech company employees on amazonclimatejustice.org, where supporters can anonymously register their concerns.
